The haute couture houses of fashion in Paris stopped producing designs during the war, so by the mid ’40s their influence had waned. After World War II ended in 1945, the doors for American fashion designers opened wide with stylish opportunity. I used to beg my parents to take me to the only 1950s themed dinner in town, and I twirled in circle skirts my grandmother had sewn for me in blue and green Hawaiian print fabric. Growing up, I also had a love affair with the pinup girl.
